Photophobia, or light sensitivity, is a common symptom of migraine.  It is one of the criteria used to actually diagnose migraine.  Some people experience photophobia daily and some are completely disabled due to it.  What exactly is photophobia?  Photophobia is an extreme sensitivity to light.  The sun or bright light can cause discomfort, squinting, excessive blinking, nausea and headache.

As a person with migraine, light sensitivity is one of the more prevailing symptoms I deal with.  All types of light are very bothersome to me, whether it be indoor or outdoor. Fluorescent lighting, LED lights, headlights, traffic lights, brightness from television, computer, and smartphone screens, and sunlight all hurt my eyes.  Being a blogger, typing on a computer or updating my social media accounts on my smartphone can be a real difficult task.  Running errands during the day when it is really bright outside triggers a migraine attack almost immediately.

Is there a remedy for managing photophobia?  Well, you're in luck because there is.  Axon Optics provides therapeutic eyewear for migraine and light sensitivity.  One of the founders of Axon Optics is Dr. Bradley Katz, a neuro-ophthalmologist at the University of Utah.  He studies the pain pathway associated with migraine and photophobia, and through his work, Axon Optics developed the SpectraShield FL-41 migraine glasses lens for both indoor and outdoor sunglasses.

FL-41 improves light sensitivity by blocking out blue and green wavelengths of light, which are thought to be a problem for patients with light sensitivity.  Through Axon Optics, you can purchase glasses for migraine to help alleviate the symptoms of light sensitivity and reduce the frequency of migraine.  Watch this 45 second video that explains how migraine glasses work:
When you start wearing glasses for migraine and light sensitivity, this is what can happen:
  1. 2x - A study was conducted by Dr. Katz and 9 other academic researchers on how this type of lens affects patients with a light sensitive condition called BEB. The patients saw a 2x improvement in their severity of light sensitivity by wearing the lens compared to wearing regular grey lenses.
  2. 6->2 - A study performed by researchers at the University of Birmingham, England tested a group of migraine sufferers. They had them wear migraine glasses with FL-41 lenses. Participants experienced a reduction in the number of migraines, from over 6 episodes per month to under 2 episodes per month.
Not too long ago my regular pair of sunglasses broke and I was having a hard time finding a good replacement.  The ones I had helped block out some of the harsh, bright lights but they weren't 100% effective in doing so. I am always bothered by light.  It always seems too bright any and everywhere I go.  Light sensitivity for me causes pain in my eyes, headaches, dizziness, and nausea, so it is important that I protect them at all times. Whether indoor or outdoor, light is a huge problem and trigger for me.  When I had the opportunity to try a pair of Axon Optics outdoor sunglasses, I jumped at the chance.  I have heard really good things about this brand and I was eager to try them out for myself.

I opted for the Art Deco Curve sunglasses in Red.  They are absolutely fantastic and super stylish.  These frames are funky and cute with "Greek Pottery-style patterns, little white crystals, and vibrantly-colored plastic."

Besides them being so fashionable, they also work! Let me tell you that I get immediate relief from the harsh sunlight as soon as I put them on.  I can go grocery shopping, run to the bank, and go to my doctor appointments without worrying about adjusting from outdoor to indoor lighting.  Even though these are outdoor migraine glasses, they work very well for indoor lighting as well.  I keep them on when I'm out and about.  They fit very comfortably on my face and do not pinch or squeeze my temples, like some other glasses often do.  These glasses are a permanent fixture in my purse.  I never take them out... EVER!
