Yesterday, I posted three truths and one myth about fibromyalgia syndrome. Which one was incorrect? Number three! Although many who suffer with fibromyalgia associate it with a physical injury or trauma, they are not the only possible causes. Read more about what researchers and scientists are looking into as causes for the onset of fibromyalgia here and here.
1. Fibromyalgia pain can be very mild for some to extremely severe for others, causing a significant impact to their quality of life.
2. Diagnosing fibromyalgia often takes time and can be difficult. There is no lab test to determine if a person indeed has fibromyalgia syndrome, i.e. an x-ray or blood test. A physical exam and a person's symptoms are used as a diagnostic tool, although many of the symptoms overlap with other similar conditions, making it challenging to confirm fibromyalgia.
3. Onset of fibromyalgia is typically caused by a physically and stressful traumatic event, such as an automobile accident, or repetitive injuries.
4. Fibromyalgia affects about 5 million people, with 80 to 90 percent being women. Men and children can also be affected by fibromyalgia.
