#Sponsored: Mothers: A Conversation About Migraine

We all know Khloè Kardashian to be a mogul, TV personality, and businesswoman. For the past thirteen years, her life and family have been on our television screens with Keeping Up With the Kardashians. But, what most may not know about Khloè is that she has lived with migraine since she was in the sixth grade. Migraine, as we all know, does not discriminate among those who are afflicted with this debilitating neurological disease.

It doesn’t matter what your race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status is when it comes to migraine. It can and does affect people from all walks of life. As someone who is an outspoken advocate in the migraine and headache community, I thought it was important for me to have a conversation with Khloè, mother to mother. Personally, I felt as though she hasn’t been seen as a person living with migraine. Rather, her disease is diminished because of her fame.

My platform is to empower, uplift, and validate others living with migraine. Khloè deserves that too and I was truly honored to speak with her as another woman who lives with the debilitating disease. Although we experience migraine differently, we certainly had a lot we could relate to and I am thrilled to share our human experience with you all.

Balancing Migraine and Motherhood

Managing migraine as a single person is no easy task. Throwing the responsibility and challenges of parenthood on top of the unpredictability of migraine pretty much equates to chaos. I was diagnosed with migraine when my children were still in grade school. My daughter, who is 22, has only known a mom with migraine. I've done my best to try not to let my disease get in the way of being a mom. I know you're a mom and you have a beautiful little girl, True. How do you balance migraine disease and motherhood?

Khloè:

“Goodness, it's tough as you know. And interestingly enough, I've suffered since I was in the sixth grade. I've always wanted to find a cure or something to help me get through my migraine.  Nothing has motivated me more than when I had my daughter because you can't understand mom-guilt until you actually have a baby <sic>.

I assume it was from hormones, my migraine kind of flared up even more than normal after I had my daughter. It really just motivated me to find a solution. I have tried everything, from prescriptions, over the counter to homeopathic to acupuncture, anything, you name it, I've done it.”

“I was given Nurtec ODT as a sample from my neurologist. I tried it. It worked for me, I had migraine relief within 15 minutes. I was literally good to go like nothing ever happened within an hour, for me. I was able to be with my daughter without hindering any normal activity we would do or just me being a little grumpy. Normally, I can't lift my head off my pillow because my head, it's like, it feels like bricks when I'm suffering. So just to have that ability to be myself and not be afraid that I'm going to be taken away from her and isolated in my room. It's just given me such relief, and I'm so grateful for Nurtec ODT.”

Nurtec® ODT 75 mg orally disintegrating tablets is a prescription medicine for the acute treatment of migraine in adults. Nurtec ODT is not used as a preventive treatment of migraine. Do not take if you are allergic to Nurtec ODT or any of its ingredients. The most common side effect was nausea in 2% of patients.

Being Present

I completely shared Khloè’s sentiment. My story's a little different because I'm intractable and have migraine every day. But what Nurtec ODT has done for me is it has given me hours back in my day that I didn't have before. And when you get that time back it's so precious and it means so much. So, I completely understood where Khloè was coming from, especially as a mom because it means so much to be there for our children. She went on to describe the importance of being present in a life with migraine.

Khloè:

“..., we want to be present with our children. Just to be present. Like it's one thing just to be a body because I've been with her when I've had a migraine and its...it’s sort of like a shell of yourself because I’m just there. I’m just so mentally checked out because I’m focused on this agonizing pain. To have a couple hours to be present and be able to do activities with your kids.

I'm so honored that you're interviewing me. I think it's our duty since we have these platforms to tell our stories and hopefully help a couple of people get some of their day or some hours back to be with their children or just [show up] in their [own] life. We shouldn't be taken away from our lives.”

Stay tuned for part two next week!
