#MHAMBC Day 20 - Peer Inspiration

Headache or Migraine Role Model: Who do you know who has any form of headache or migraine whom you look to as a role model for inspiring hope and never giving up? How do they inspire you?

For years, I didn't have anyone to look to who had Migraine.  Growing up, one of my cousins also had Migraine, as well as my mother and her father.  I remember not having adequate pain relief during an attack and most vividly, not really having anyone in my day to day life that I could relate to.  My mom was great to talk to because she suffered as a child also. Sometimes my cousin and I would talk about our Migraines but it generally revolved around what medications we were on or tried.  For the most part, I dealt with my pain by myself. The older I became the more isolated I would feel.  This continued up until I got into my thirties.

I started to find support groups on Facebook for people with Migraine and depression. Through these groups I have met many inspirational and wonderful people.  I have forged new friendships, some of whom I am proud to call my family.  Four years ago I started this blog in an effort to be transparent and to raise awareness about Migraine, depression and chronic pain.  Having my blog introduced me to so many people in the Migraine community who like myself, are doing what they can to raise awareness, educate the public, and provide support to patients.  Each person that I have come across has been a source of inspiration and hope for me.  There are so many people that have encouraged me through their stories and experiences.

What I have gained from these friendships has provided me with so much knowledge, comfort and community.  It is my hope to provide these things to those I speak to.  Having gone through so many years alone in my struggle with this disease and the accompanying depression has compelled me to be that beacon of hope and comfort for others who may find themselves in similar situations or arenas in life.  In this community, we are all role models for each other, displaying courage, empowerment and perseverance raising hopes for all who live with Migraine and Headaches.
