#MHAMBC Day 21 - Brave

"Brave:" Watch the video below of Sara Bareilles' "Brave" and listen to the lyrics. Then tell us how standing up for ourselves gives us hope.

Taking a stand for what you believe in is empowering.  Not only do you see strength in yourself, you gain respect and have a sense of resolve.  I find it necessary to be open, honest and straightforward in life and with Migraine.  Whether I am discussing treatment options with my neurologist or primary care physician or talking with my therapist, I try my best to be transparent.  I was always taught that you are treated in the same way that you treat others.  In order to be respected you must show respect.  If I do not agree with a suggestion or have reservations with a proposed treatment, I make sure to let my doctor know that I appreciate what he or she is doing but that I don't feel comfortable at this time taking that route and can be revisited in the future.  I offer up some suggestions and if they are not plausible, then that's okay too.  That's why it is important to ask questions.  It is equally important to be open to not hearing what you want and be okay with that.  Even if I may leave an appointment without anything being resolved, I remain hopeful because I was able to vocalize my opinion and thoughts, which were respectfully received and not dismissed.  It just might not be the time for change and I have to be okay with that happening from time to time.  I choose to not take preventive medications and currently, I am no longer on any abortive or rescue medications either.  It is difficult at times when the only answer seems to be medicate, medicate, medicate.  Yet, I stand in my truth of not being comfortable with being on medications and we try to find other options.  My Migraine needs to be better managed so I decided to give Botox another shot.  Five years ago I received four rounds of Botox injections to no avail.  No relief, change in frequency or intensity was gained and I was very disappointed.  When I emailed my neurologist about it, he said that there is a different neurologist than who I saw previously who is much more efficient in administering the injections with greater result.  That gives me a lot of hope!  It probably just wasn't my time then for it to work.  Now that I have changed so much in my approach to healing, maybe this time will be a more positive experience.  My appointment is this Wednesday and I'm looking forward to it.  Standing up for myself brought me to where I am today and I have more hope than I have had in years.
