Say What?!: The Most Ridiculous Thing I Ever Heard About Migraines (HAWMC Day 7)

What I hate the most is when someone tries to tell me how to get rid of my migraines.  As if I haven't learned anything about them over these past 26 years!  It drives me nuts and I tend to get a bit snippy with people who think they know what's best for me.  I've heard it all from taking Excedrin, drinking coffee, drink more water, exercise more and trying Imitrex.  As if I haven't run the gamut of treatments, medications, and everything else in between.  Most people have an opinion and a cure for me.  But what I think has been the most ridiculous thing ever said to me had to have been from my pediatricians and neurologist growing up.  They all said that once I hit puberty I would see a drop in the severity and frequency of my migraines, to the point where they may actually just go away.  I was pumped full of false hope and spent many years waiting for the pain to leave for good.  It never happened, obviously, and only have gotten worse.  No one knew that for sure so it should never have been said to me, especially with such certainty.  I was let down big time and started to not trust what doctors had to say about my migraine headaches.  Needless to say, they're still a huge part of my life.  It would have been nice if doctors were better educated on migraine disease, especially back in the 1980's.  However, I was a guinea pig and remained that for many, many years.  Nothing good ever comes out of whining about the past, so I push forward and try to learn as much as I can about how this disease works and how it affects my body.  Oh, and lemon peels, royal jelly and vinegar soaked compresses haven't cured me of any migraine.  Go figure!

  1. It only took me until I was 56 to finally have something prescribed to me that really helped with my migraines, about an 80 % reduction in frequency and a 50% drop in severity. It probably shouldn't surprise me given the fact that with all the other migraine preventatives you are hoping to duplicate someone else's side effect, that it was not even prescribed FOR my migraines, it was prescribed for something not even related to them, it works for that, the migraine relief is just a side effect, best one I've ever had in my life, and it gave me far better migraine prevention than any of the other meds that all the rest of my doctors combined ever actually prescribed FOR my migraines. Maybe it is a karmic thing, after all the bad experiences with side effects I've had over the years, I was due for a real good one eventually.
